Master the basics of drawing chibis—which are super-small sidekicks, pets, and alter egos that are essential to manga cartooning—with The Manga Artist’s Workbook: Chibis, by Christopher Hart, a bestselling author in the field of art instruction. This workbook highlights important techniques for creating the chubby rounded bodies, sweet doe eyes, and action poses that make each character unique. With tracing paper, blank practice pages, and exercises, this sketchbook and art tutorial rolled into one as a portable journal will help you master this popular aspect of drawing manga.
This book is fun but it is compiled slightly awkwardly. He goes over many different variations of types of chibis from hands to goths to animals; all very cute. He does a very good job explaining chibis and their construction. What I didn't like about this book was that their were conflicting skill levels. Some images required detail and an intermediate skill to draw. Then similar images were given with tracing paper. And then some more intermediate level drawings were given with their outline printed on the paper giving you a place to start. By intermediate level I mean that you have to have some drawing experience to copy the images and have them look good. The skill level this book is targeting is not clear. It is very well done and I highly recommend it but I think that Hart's first workbook was much better. I encourage beginners to get the book simply because chibis are not overwhelming, even though the pictures are more for manga artists with a little experience.
